The Safe Schools Act, 2000 requires that school boards are in
compliance with the Act and its regulations.Statement of Policy
The Peel District School Board is committed to promoting good
citizenship and encouraging a respectful learning environment. This policy
outlining expectation5 for Opening and Closing Exercises is in accordance
with provisions of the Education Act, the Safe Schools Act, 20005.304 and
amendments to Regulation 298.
Requirements
- All students shall sing O Canada as part of their opening or
closing exercises
- The principal shall consult with their Superintendent of Schools to
ensure that decisions regarding the reciting of the Pledge of
Citizenship are consistent with policies and guidelines of the Board
prior to consulting with School councils
- The principal shall consult with the school council prior to making
his or her initial decision regarding the reciting of the Pledge of
Citizenship and review his or her decision at the beginning of each
School year in consultation with the 5chool council.
In accordance with amendments to Regulation 298, the principal shall
exempt a pupil from participating in the singing of O Canada and/or
the recitation of the Pledge of Citizenship, if established by the Board
in the following circumstances:
- In the case of a pupil who is less than 18 years old, if the pupil's
parent or guardian applies to the principal to be exempted from doing so
- In the case of a pupil who is at least 18 years old, if the pupil
applies to the principal to be exempted from doing so.
